today we drive from Wells back to Gurney Slade... our home at Croft Cottage. it's very close. i suggest that we drive via any random village in The Mendips, thats the nearby AONB, area of outstanding natural beauty.
i go to the book. they drive from Wells to... Priddy. good enough for me.
First, breakfast at the hotel.
time for a walk round Wells. the museum doesn't open till 10 so, instead, we have coffee and... almond croissant. tasted good but nothing light and flaky about it. the filling is sweet and... gritty. our best guess is that it includes ground almonds.
and now it's time to leave Wells.
The car is parked just off the road but, it's tricky.
Very close to the left wall. Deb has to reverse out. I stand on the road and wave my white stick at oncoming traffic. Finally, a gap. Deb reverses out. I follow her down the road till it's safe for me to get in. And we're off.
To Priddy. Where the Queen Victoria Inn has good reviews.
There's a crowd at the Inn. Each year, every person in the village signs a book. It's a record, a history, of who lives in Priddy. What a brilliant idea. I wonder how long it's been going on.
We walk on. Up the road, past the Green. There are people gathering there, too. Today is a picnic on the Green. We look at the drizzling rain. Feel the chilly wind. Think, picnic, eh.
it's okay, they have a large marquee tent. anyway, they're English. And the rain is barely drizzling.
There are bouncy castles and soccer goals. and a burst of applause from inside the marquee.
Priddy is at the top of the Mendips and it's cold. there is a constant, chilly, wind blowing. but the mist is clearing.
it's actually quite pleasant. With views of rolling farmlands. Through the mist.
We walk past the school, Hall, church, then along a public footpath. That is, a lane for pedestrians. Peaceful countryside. Beautiful.
We walk back to Priddy, have lunch in the Inn. it's busy but the signing crowds are gone. To the Green, I guess.
it's pleasant in the Inn. Relaxing. Warm. Several wood fires blazing merrily.
After lunch we drive a bit -- and find a geocache. woohoo :-)
We start driving towards Drove Cottage henge. It sounds interesting but Google just takes us round in circles. I suspect that Google is confused because the henge is off the road. we set the gps to tDrove cottage, Google says that the henge is a walk from there. By now we've had enough... so we start navigation to home.
Then change our minds. Navigate to a shop. Our local shop is closed so we go on to the co-op in Shepton Mallet.
We buy groceries for the next few days and finally... we're home again.
Turn on the heaters. Drink tea. Sit in comfort and... watch the rain get heavier. It's good to be home:-)
