there's a clock. 11:30. at night, i can tell.
i stay lying down and think.
i remember arriving at Chambers's Place, our accommodation. a welcome by Caroline and by half a dozen chooks and Guinea fowl.
we look around. our Garden View does have a garden view. a simple garden, mostly lawn. across the garden is more green, a farm paddock.
our rooms are very nice. the only problem is that the ceilings are sloping and very low. we regularly bang our heads.
we go for a drive. to wallingford.
a sign in the market square tells us that the town was the original Causton in Midsomer Murders, i can believe it.
The square is chilly but peaceful. town Hall, town church, other old buildings, several old villagers sitting on benches.
we have coffee in a cafe,
and a Coronation Cupcake, of course.
we walk into an arcade. with shops, knicknacks, antiques and a young man who talks. he tells us about the model ships in the shop, including the Titanic. used for film sets. he tells us about woring on steam engines. i guess hes a bit simple. or a sample of the typical villager :-)
i enjoy the very one-sided conversation. interesting and easy.
on the way home we stop at the Woodcote Co-op, buy extra milk and instant coffee. our place has milk and coffee pods. we use lots of milk and instant coffee is easy.
The rooms come with enough cereal, bread and such for several breakfasts.

Deb goes for a walk. a path through the paddock and up to the top of a nice low hill.
for dinner we walk to the Red Lion pub. Deb has salmon, i have steak and kidney pudding. both very nice.
we walk home, less than a km. it's still daylight.
i think of our accommodation as being in Reading, it's not. Reading is a large town, glad we're not there.
we are well out of town, in countryside.
near Woodcote. a village... a hamlet... with a Co-op, pub, village Green, nothing much else.
we sit on the couch to watch tv and read.
Next... i wake up and have no idea where i am.
i see Deb lying on the bed. think about the room layout. so if the bed is there, i must be on the couch, the toilet must be back there...i sort myself out, dress for sleep, go to bed, sleep another seven hours.
i should mention, i had been in an absolutely foul mood. swearing at everything. swearing each time i hit my head on the ceiling.
i wake up in a better mood. apologise to Deb.
aside, in the present: we're sitting, relaxing. between being tourists and going to dinner. i stand up to go to the toilet. bang my head on the ceiling. realise i am still close to being in a foul mood.
which is a pity, because i am very much enjoying where we are, what we're doing.

today we drive again to wallingford.
theres a riverside walk which sarts at the old post office on the square. we were in the square yesterday, the walk sounds nice.
we cant find yesterdays parking area. despite making several circuits of the town. its less pleasant when trying to drive round it.
btw: one previous para is in the wrong place ie does not fit the actual time-sequence of events. it needs a simple cut and paste into its correct sequence.
im using the crapple tablet. i have never been able to master its cut and paste. so the para stays where it is.
also: using the swype keyboard causes more trouble than its worth. so im using one finger tap typing.
anything needing the shift key is too much trouble.
the typing will now be as inaccurate as the facts that i record :-)
====
we give up on the wallingford walk. as i tell deb, its all foreign stuff. river or village, all new and interesting. we can enjoy anywhere. so we leave town.
end up in Goring.
we have lunch in Pierpont Cafe, Next door to Penelopes Pooch Parlour:-)
lunch is good.
across the road is the Thames Walk. we walk
starting at goring lock. a few km along the river (thames) which is already wide and deep.
we turn away from the river, onto a path through woods, back to the village.
where we find a geocache :-)
i find that walking by a big river makes me nervous.
i cant see the left side of the path. so i tend to drift away, to my right. where i can see the big deep river.
im better walking with the river on my left -- where i cant see it. but i can align my walking by the right of the path. which i can see.
back in goring, a pleasant village. a village is better on foot.
we see a cafe... and keep on walking. its down wind of a curry restaurant the stink of curry is strong and disgusting.
no, not actually disgusting. but strong. and spoils any thought of voffee and cake.
we have coffee, powerful stuff, in the garden of the Katherine Wheel pub. its near the old mill... mill wheel... get it.
its beautiful weather. a chill wind but the sun is shining. just right for coffee in the pub garden.
theres a big twin rotor helicopter passes by a few times. we wonder if its part of coronation security.
there are Union Jacks everywhere. and signs showing that coronation celebrations will happen. all good fun.
and now were home again. relaxing.
our rooms are heated. controlled by a thermostat. cosy and warm, sometimes a bit too warm, we like to open the window... i was planning to type, but where are the flies. then a bee flew in. oh well, nyes out again and the windows are closed :-)
now were home. the tv is on. i may try to stay awake :-)

G'day Nick, sounds like you're soaking up the local ambience, I'm envious!! I think you aren't far from where my mother's family came from a bit over a hundred years ago - Reading and Sunninghill/Ascot (Berkshire). Enjoy.
