-- Deb plans to visit Kilver Gardens. I suggest we also walk in Beacon Hill Woods. We plan, we do:-)
There's a trail of seven geocaches near our cottage. Centred round Gurney Slade. We walk the circuit and find... One cache. Oh well.
It's a beautiful walk. A bit less than four km. Along lanes, on a fine but chilly morning. Other caches are along public footpaths, that is, narrow foot tracks through fields. We ignore them, we're not comfortable going "bush".
So we search for four and find one. Quite satisfying to find that one:-)
Wildlife. We see a deer standing on the edge of a lane! Deb sees a squirrel. Less wild, there are cows, staring over the gate to a path. We leave them alone, they are disappointed. Not much excitement in a cows life.
The lanes are edged with hedges. Bright with bluebells. Redolent...I think that's the word... with the smell of wild garlic. Powerful.
We get home-- exhausted -- get in the car and drive to Kilver. Less than ten minutes away. On the edge of Shepton Mallett.
There's a distinctive smell here too, not garlic, it's cooking pears.
Kilver is a cidery. Apple and pear cidery. They make Babycham.
First... we go to the cafe. It's near noon so we call this dinner and eat hearty. Cheese and stuff in rather nice bread rolls.
Then out to the gardens.
The gardens are amazing. Built across a river, so there's plenty of flowing water. And if that causes issues, there are signs reminding us that there are toilets near the cafe.
Rhododendrons in bloom. Unknown trees in full blossom, flowers in beds, paths and lawns. All backed by a massive stone viaduct.
A rock garden includes stone walls and a stone folly.
My favourite of all is a higgeldy piggledy bridge. It's less bridge and more stepping stones closely packed.
And then... a short drive to a co-op for a few groceries.
Then on to Beacon Hill Woods. It's main claim to fame is that it is a great place to take a dog. We do see one dog, a big black friendly dog in a hurry:-)
It's a nice walk in the woods. We walk a couple of quite level km. Not up to the top where the beacon would have burned.
I'm complaining but I think we're both a bit weary.
Home again, where we... do nothing. Until...
Now we sit and watch TV. it's the second Eurovision semi. Wow! And as much fun as ever:-)
