just typical

today is house cleaning day. Deb wants to do a major clean before we go away.
my job is to do the washing, the laundry.
normally I'd lie in bed till Deb turfs me out to get to the sheets. today I'm keen. i get up, grab the sheets, go downstairs to start the washing.

The washing machine fails to work.

our power has failed. one phase is gone. we have lights but not much else. certainly no washing machine.

just enough power to boil a kettle for tea, luckily. though slowly.
i make tea.
there's a text. power may be back on by noon.
several hours to wait. i may as well read a bit, and write.
Next, i plan to go back to sleep.

still...

last night i spent some time checking some of the limitations of the Apple tablet.
one function that seems to work is, i type a post as an email, press send... it should send the email when Next i have internet.
well, with no power, there is now no internet.

i type this post. i will press send. some time after noon... with power and internet working... this post should post.
so it's a good test of what i need when traveling (with only occasional internet)

so, a good pre holiday test. whoopee!

could be worse. at least i have a hot cup of tea. and that's something too be glad about :-)

PS later: the send-later works :-)

crApple

over the years i have collected 40 or 50 ebooks. all standard epubs.
i read them reread them. look forward to reading them.

i copied them from the old tablet to the new apple.
apple refused to read some of them. i still had enough books to keep me amused on a holiday.

today, they are all gone. disappeared. even the book that i was reading last week. deleted, as far as i can tell.

there i was, determined to face up to my fears. i installed some seemingly useful apps on the Apple. started to learn how they worked. or didn't work.

and today -- all those books are lost.
what a fucking pile of Apple shit.

thank goodness i still have the ancient android.
which still holds every one of my collected books.

i can read ebooks on the android. i can read and send emails. unlike the crApple. all it does is crash and delete files.

next week, the old android is going on holidays. again.
the crApple is going onto the floor in the junk room. again.

baaaad apple

i notice a magazine article which starts, smashing something may seem cathartic. is it actually a form of avoidance?

so i go to the end room. pick up the apple tablet from the floor where i threw it. I'll give it yet another go. stupid device.

one dream of many

I often wake up and think, that was an interesting, or funny, or peculiar dream.
then the memory fades and all i remember is that it was interesting or...
i do remember one dream from last night.

I'm at a work related party. strange enough so far.
i notice that one young woman is sitting on a chair with only three legs. the chair, not the woman.

i pick up the missing leg. i should talk to the woman, i think, offer to reattach the leg to the chair.
instead, i give the chair leg to another man, he takes the leg to the woman.
you'll be sorry, says a nearby voice, when those two come to the next works picnic with seventeen children.
i wake up.

a peculiar dream. but... here's the good news: it's a sign that i am feeling cheerful.
eh?! yes. because it's a "dirty" dream. yep!

my dirty dreams have become pretty tame. in these dreams there is always a woman. barely any action beyond her presence. sometimes I'll wake with a vague but impractical section. more often i will wake with the happy feeling that i could almost have an serection.

the thing is, i have these dreams... only when my waking mood is positive. cheerful.
so a dirty dream is a sign of a positive mood.
and, of course. no matter how little actually happens in the dream... it is always pleasant. even if it makes no sense :-)

join the queue

1. run results

The results are in: both Deb and I won our categories in Saturday's trail run :-)
It helps that no other 70 year olds made it to the event in Collie. We ran, we won, we had a great weekend.
====

2. one of many
Yes, I'm a bit embarrassed that my terminal cancer is taking so long to terminate.
While waiting, I hear of people who get the same cancer and due quickly. Also, Friends and relations are hit by diseases which are more debilitating than mine. Some friends simply disappear, I fear the worst. It all makes me realise:
Yes, I have a cancer which is known to be terminal and incurable. But so what? I've reached an age where death -- for anyone -- would be no surprise. The only question is... what particular problem will kill me. All ssorts of things line up to kill an "old" person. Death, like taxes, is inevitable.

For me, brain cancer is camped in the queue. There may, as for everyone else, be other problems, just not yet identified.
Really... after the initial panic... I am now in much the same situation as anyone else of my age.
Although, now I think of it... it's also quite a few years since I've paid taxes. that's a benefit of not earning much.

Hmmm. I've just read that, according to research, running helps the runner resist depression. Something to do with the body producing natural cannabinoids. It may be easier to go straight to the cannabis...

3. old is new again

I've mentioned my new Apple tablet. it's a pile of junk. Hard to use and it regularly crashes.Makes me angry just to think about it. (Angry at my stupid decision to buy it, as much as anything.)
This post is typed on my ten year old android tablet. No crash while typing. A poor screen display but not bad.
The familiarity of ten year's use around the world.
It works.
This week, the Apple goes to a good home. Or to a bin.
There, no need to go for a run. I feel better already :-)

learn something new

i post to a couple of blogs. for one, i added a tiny bit of JavaScript. Now, when anyone looks at that blog it says, Hello World!
simple. pointless. a tiny bit of success and very satisfying :-)

even more fun

i should mention:  we were booked for two Collie runs. Deb has a pulled muscle, we decide to not do the night run. One run is enough.

this evening we go to the Mumby Pub for dinner.
last time we were here, years ago, it was at the start of a Bibb track walk. Tonight, we're just here for dinner.
Deb has fish, i have steak. I'm reminded how good a steak dinner can be in a country pub.
it rains on and off during the evening. Doesn't worry us, we're snug and dry. and now... inside, warm, relaxing:-)

One geocache

there's a glen Mervyn cache, it must be close...
We walk less than a km. then across the dam. along a bit of the bibb track. Shelter under the trees from a light sprinkle of rain
xxx
we find the cache :-) walk home again. that was fun!
relax, drink tea, watch alpacas, sit, relax. all good.

Collie trail fest

We drive to Collie for a weekend of trail running.
Stopping for lunch at Stirling Cottage just before Harvey. The food is okay, it's a beautiful spot with nice gardens, we always stop here.
We turn onto Mornington Road, a quiet winding, sealed, road through forest.

xx
Deb drives, I play with the new sound system. The original radio +CD stopped working.
The new system is the simplest available...
The radio works.
There is no CD player, our CDs are copied to thumb drive.

There is some ability to select a music track, generally the player gives us whatever random track it finds. Luckily we like all of the music on the thumb drive.

The player has a bluetooth connection to our phones. We're not sure whose phone it's picking up...
Deb's phone is navigating, the sound system shows where we are but not where we are going.
My phone is doing nothing but has siri. I shout hey siri at the sound system, it shows the swirly siri symbol but otherwise ignores me.
The system includes a hema map module, even the man who installed it could not display a hema map.

I can now consistently get music. Sometimes even music
xxx that we want.
So it's better than the old broken system.

Do you see the occasional xx ? That's where the tablet crashes and has to restart. Crap Apple tablet pile of junk. anyway...

xxx again
anyway.
We arrive at our accommodation. Glen Mervyn Lodge. It's a cottage on a farm. peaceful, cosy, very nice. also surprising... i'm not sure of my understanding when i booked but today my expectation is... a room in a resort. i like where we are, just, unexpected!

vicki the owner tells us that tomorrow is balingup field day, that would be fun but we're here for a run.
then vicki leaves for the nursing home, where she will feed mother.

saturday: up at six, out by seven, running from harris river dam by 8:30.

i'm reminded how nice it it to run along a bush trail.
it takes a while to warm up, temp is 3C, im in shorts and running shirt. it takes a while till my fingers are warm.

i have a new gps watch, the old one runs flat even before i do.
the gps setup demands things that i dont want, still some work to do.
once we are actually ready to run -- the gps is simple and easy to use. 5.52km, it says. i forget how long we took. not a winning time but not the last to finish:-)

run done, we can relax.
we drive to collie, to a cafe, for coffee and a scone.
we buy a chicken roll to take home for lunch. plus some cupcakes from a stall, raising money to send high school kids on an overseas trip next year.

back home, we relax with a bath. the water drains into a ditch in the paddock, a good system, no need to waste the water.

temp is about 18C, chilly but pleasant.
now we do nothing till dinner.
nothing except look for a geocache that is. I'll send this, then see how far it is. see if we should walk or drive.

meditation

In a previous post I commented on a book... that post should have gone to a different blog. One where I comment on books that I have read (or not).

Now for this blog:
I run round the lake as a form of meditation. As I run I'm thinking through problems. Or keeping my mind clear of problems. Either way, I come home mentally refreshed :-)

My app is possibly dead. Google has introduced a new playStore requirement, one which I cannot reach. If the requirement is retrospective, my app will disappear in June. Oh well.

So I need a new aim in life. I decide that my new target is, to run my next marathon in the year I turn 80. Impossible? Probably. But I enjoy having a definite target. I may have to reconsider when I reach 79 :-)

cause and delayed effect

Why does someone get brain cancer? I have this theory:
As a child, I fell a few feet and hit my head on a wooden chair. Years later I still had the scar.
So my theory is: the fall damaged my brain. Fifty years later, the damage grew into a tumour.
Okay... no scientific backing at all. I've not even bothered to ask if it is likely. But, as a theory, I like it. Why?

An alternative cause (ignoring random chance and just bad luck) is -- perhaps brain cancer is hereditary.
That's not something that I want to pass on to the kids. I prefer the physical damage explanation.
Oh, and "just bad luck" has never applied to me :-)

notes on exercise

A few days ago:
I'm running round the lake, while talking on the phone. I make some observations:
... I run so slowly that I can talk at the same time.
... I run so slowly that it is definitely not aerobic exercise. Pity, I need aerobic.
... Thinking on my phone conversation:
My answers were I don't know, or wrong.
... I can't run and think and talk all at the same time.

don't relax. set a rogaine

I put up my hand, say that I would like to use my app as the basis for setting a novelty rogaine. Wait to hear if there are any questions. How does the app work? for example. I suggest that it would be nice if plenty of people test the app, see if it is suitable (pwMapApp, Memorials Rhapsody all in Kings Park, fyi. Two rogainers try it.
We turn up at the AGM -- and it appears to be a fait accompli. Oh. So, with a co-setter... I'll be setting (I guess) the next November Novelty rogaine.

Next night, I can't sleep. Will the app work for an actual event?
I'm sure it will... mostly. Finding and recording points is okay. Getting overall event results... possibly okay.

See, this is why people never volunteer: whatever it is it is always more complicated than expected. And people depend on whatever you volunteered to do.
